Samsung Galaxy S2
Update; Info and specs added about GS2 +, the latest version also includes an optional nfc chip, further down under the video.
Galaxy S2 nfc Phones with / without, enabled / disabled chip.
(Until now, aug.2011, NFC-enabled only spotted in South Korea)
The Galaxy S2 with NFC soon in the US (AT&T, T-Mobile?) and Canada (Rogers, Telus), at least…. that’s what everyone writes
. Also at Orange in France NFC-enabled in oktober?
At the moment, until the contrary is proved, assume that the Galaxy S2 not NFC enabled.
Where we find the Samsung Galaxy S2 with NFC chip;
T-Mobile US (ICS 4.0.3=ISIS/NFC updated! via droid-life)
AT&T US with disabled chip
Orange France (Cityzi)
TIM Italia
South Korea
Telstra Australia (4G)
Rogers Canada (LTE)
Telus Canada (X)
Update aug’12; T-Mobile SGH-T989 approved for ISIS
NFC chip presence summarized; European and early international versions do not have NFC. Later international versions do have NFC. Yes we have the Cityzi branded, NFC enabled Galaxy SII from Orange in France.
-You need a Galaxy SII with a nfc chip. -Right battery with the NFC antenna. -You also need a SIM for NFC, with secure element. (source; forum.xda-developers.com, unfortunately Samsung tells us nothing about this)
PROS:
screen display
web browsing
camera
android gingerbread
light
call quality
video
fast
CONS:
gets hot (literally)
battery life
using contacts
no hardware key for camera
“Leave your wallet at home. The Samsung GALAXY S2 has it in hand. It will house NFC short-range high frequency wireless communication technology for contactless credit card payments. It can communicate with existing smartcards and readers and is compatible with existing contactless infrastructure for public transportation and payment systems. Use NFC for secure purchasing, ticket reservations, as a transit pass, or even for electronic door entry. You can even scan smart tags on posters or billboards to download the details to your phone. That’s Samsung smart!” (Samsung.com)
October ’11 at AT&T, that’s everywhere published.
Sept ’11; Galaxy S2 NFC at T-Mobile October 12.
Galaxy S II T-Mobile
Update sept ’11, Samsung; The AT&T Galaxy S2 is not NFC-enabled, and no further info than that. (It seems that the NFC functionality is dormant. The words “Near Field Communications” are inscribed on the battery. Traces of NFC in the Phone’s firmware, and a not functioning NFC Service app.)according engadget
Maybe NFC is just waiting the roll out of ISIS virtual wallet program.
Update okt ’11; Galaxy S II at T-Mobile seems to have an enabled NFC, but no NFC app was functioning in engadget’s review.
Update okt ’11; Leaks reveal, Galaxy S2 expected to get Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich operating system upgrade.
update jan ’12; Certified for VISA PayWave
update jan 12; South Korea’s two largest operators have sold a combined 3.3 million Galaxy S II s with NFC chip, SK Telecom sold 2,3 million and KT sold 980.000 handsets. source: NFCTimes.com
update March ’12; In February 10 months the best selling phone in the UK.
update March ’12; Not officially announced, but according to a “leaked memo”, O.S. upgrade to Android 4 ICS will start later this month for the Galaxy SII !
update March ’12; Galaxy S II owners in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea can upgrade to Android 4 ICS, including the new Android Beam application. The upgrade will be rolled out to other countries in the next months.
AT&T vs European version;
The GALAXY S2 is one of the best Android Mobile Phones. There were some “Cons”, irritations better said. Most of them are fixed. The AT&T Phone uses the standard Android Gingerbread keyboard now and not the Samsung keyboard anymore. It has a better e-mail app. Generally the software pleases much more. Only “the default notification sounds are terrible”. (says bgr.com)
