Nokia N9
The tablet-style smartphone is the first (and last?) Meego-based Nokia.
In Switserland the N9 is announced for September 15th. Rumours say, no Meego-Phone in countrys where Windows Phone handsets will be launched later this year.
The bold, all-screen phone has no back or home keys. You swipe from app to app in a continuous flow. Fast and simple to use.
The phone has an embedded secure element or Single Wire Protocol (SWP)?? It’s needed in order to support mobile wallets or secure payments. Also read the updates below.
It seems the N9 will be available in:
See listings further downwards. Countries from updated official Nokia availability list.
Nokia: “At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available.” The company will also not be bringing more Symbian devices to the United States. Nokia will focus its efforts on promoting its upcoming Windows Phone handsets in the U.S. market.
Update sept.1, source Nokia.com; Nokia will bring secure NFC to the Symbian platform in the first half of 2012, and all the future Symbian smartphones will support NFC. I found nothing about secure element or SWP on Nokia.com. Still a small secret which technical choices Nokia made.
Secure NFC = secure payment?
And… N9 is a Meego Phone, but the question remains the same.
Update sept.7; Nokia has just confirmed that its MeeGo smartphone, the Nokia N9, will be available in Singapore later this month for a suggested retail price of at S$799 and S$899 for the 16GB and 64GB respectively. It is thought that all three operators
in Singapore, Singtel, Starhub and M1, will be carrying the phone on suitable data plans. It is believed that the rest of Asia will get the phone but specific release dates have not yet been announced. (cnet asia)
Update sept.12, I asked Nokia and here the reply; “Secure NFC in this context means secure payment. Nokia is committed to supporting the specification, implementation and introduction of NFC phones with the SIM-based (Single Wire Protocol) secure element.” Source; Nokia Media Relations.
Reply says “NFC Phones”, That’s probably not entirely correct. Nokia didn’t confirm anymore, but we better read; all symbian NFC Phones. It seems the C7 and N9 will never support contactless payments, like Nokia said many months ago.
Sept.21, In Australia pre-order open; 16/64 mem. 829,-/979,- $aus. (627,-/742,- Euro) Bonus a NFC/Bluetooth headset.
Sept.22, Nokia announced; The Nokia N9 will be available in October and sold through Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and all major retailers throughout Australia.
Practically all carriers and retailers offer some bonus.
Sept.27, Nokia begins shipping N9 to customers and stores.
