Dec.’12; McDonald’s has announced the roll-out of contactless payments in its 83 restaurants across Ireland. From now, customers can tap with nfc enabled cards in all McDonald’s restaurants. For transactions of €15 or less no need to enter your PIN.
Dec.’12; Arnotts in Dublin has become the first department store in Ireland to offer contactless payments. The store has installed almost 200 terminals enabled for contactless payments.
2011; The Bank of Ireland launched Visa contactless debit cards. These cards with an NFC chip let customers pay for goods costing €15 and less just by holding the card over the reader (without pin).
2011; Centra convenience stores announced; “Contactless payments will be accepted in selected stores in late 2011, before being rolled out across the rest of Centra’s network of 464 stores in 2012.”
2012; Spar, Eurospar, Mace and XL are partnering with Visa Europe to accept payments from NFC-enabled contactless cards. BWG Foods, owner of these retailers, has about 900 stores across Ireland. The majority of these 900 stores should accept contactless payments by the end of 2012.
Customers can quickly pay for items costing up to €15 with contactless cards without pin-code. BWG Foods hopes this will offer faster payments, reduced queues and happier customers.
The level of consumer protection is the same as with all other Visa cards. After a certain number of times or above a particular value, customers will be prompted to input a PIN-code to complete their purchase.
sept.’12; McHugh’s Costcutter Ballindine, Co. Mayo has become the first store within the Barry Group to install contactless payment technology. As part of CBE’s continued rollout of contactless to their customers throughout the country, McHugh’s are now in a position to accept contactless enabled debit cards. source cbe.ie
Pharmacy chain Boots now accepts contactless payments.
Insomnia (coffee chain) accepts payments with the Zapa NFC tags. The sticker tracks all purchases with each tap made. The tags store any loyalty points or coupons earned from your purchases at participating shops, cafes or venues.
